We're IICRC certified in flood restoration, so we follow the international standard for water damage: find out what kind of water it is, how far it has spread, and how to dry it safely.

  • Storm water and surface flooding
  • Wet carpet and underlay in homes, rentals and businesses

What to Do First After a Flood or Leak

These steps help limit the damage while you wait for us.

  1. Stay safe. If water is near power points or appliances, turn the power off at the switchboard if it's safe to do so. Don't walk through water that may be live.
  2. Stop the water. Turn off the water at the toby or mains, or the valve on the leaking appliance.
  3. Take photos. Photograph the water and damaged items before anything is moved. Your insurer will want them.
  4. Protect your belongings. Lift furniture off wet carpet, or put foil or plastic under the legs to stop stains. Move rugs, electronics and papers to a dry room.
  5. Call us. We'll ask a few questions, advise on what to do next and arrange a time to come out.

Wet carpet? Don't pull it up yourself. Carpet and underlay are easy to damage when wet, and we may be able to dry them in place.

Wet carpet

Wet Carpet Drying and Water Removal

Carpet is often the first thing water reaches and the last thing to dry. Water soaks through the pile into the underlay and sometimes the floor beneath, so a carpet that feels dry on top can still be wet underneath.

Our emergency carpet drying focuses on the whole floor, not just the surface:

  • Water extraction. We remove as much water as possible from the carpet and underlay first.
  • Moisture checks. We check how far the water has travelled, including under the carpet and into skirting.
  • Professional drying.Drying equipment is set up to dry the carpet, underlay and room together.
  • Clean and deodorise.Once it's dry, we clean the carpet so it looks and smells fresh again.

If the carpet or underlay can't be saved, we'll tell you straight. Because we also supply and lay carpet, we can replace it without you needing another contractor.

IICRC water categories

Clean, Grey and Black Water: Why It Matters

The IICRC sorts water damage into three categories. The category decides what can be dried and what has to go.

IICRC water damage categories
CategorySourceWhat it means
1Clean waterBurst supply pipe, tap left runningIf dried quickly, carpet and underlay can often be saved.
2Grey waterWashing machine, dishwasher, toilet overflow without wasteIt contains contaminants, so carpet needs cleaning and sanitising, and underlay is usually replaced.
3Black waterSewage, or floodwater from outside that has picked up soil and wasteIt's a health risk. Affected carpet and underlay are removed and replaced, not cleaned.

Mould risk

Mould Risk and Why Fast Drying Matters

Damp carpet and underlay can start to grow mould within 24 to 48 hours, especially in winter or in closed-up rooms. You may notice a musty smell before you see anything.

Wet carpet that smells is a sign moisture is trapped underneath. Drying the carpet, underlay and floor properly and quickly is the best way to stop mould before it starts. Avoid closing the room up while it's wet, and keep anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room until it's dry.

How long does wet carpet take to dry?
It depends on how much water there was, the water category, and the weather. Drying usually takes days rather than hours, because the underlay and floor must dry too. We check moisture levels and tell you when it's properly dry.
Can water-damaged carpet be saved?
Often, yes, if it's clean water and drying starts quickly. Underlay soaked by grey water is usually replaced. Carpet soaked by sewage or outside floodwater should be replaced for health reasons.
Should I lift the carpet myself?
It's usually best not to. Wet carpet stretches and tears easily, and lifting it can damage the backing. Lift furniture off it, stop the water source and call us.
How much does flood restoration cost?
Flood restoration is quote-based and starts from $350 incl. GST. The final cost depends on the size of the wet area, the water category and whether anything needs replacing. We confirm the price before work starts.
Does insurance cover water-damaged carpet?
Many policies cover sudden water damage, but every policy is different. Check your policy, call your insurer early and keep photos and receipts.
Why does wet carpet smell, and is it a health risk?
A musty smell means moisture is trapped and bacteria or mould may be growing. It can affect people with asthma or allergies. Proper drying of the carpet, underlay and floor removes the cause.
Are you available on weekends?
Yes. We work 7 days a week, 6am to 8pm, including weekends.
How long can carpet stay wet before it's ruined?
Not long. The US Environmental Protection Agency advises drying wet carpet within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mould. Clean-water damage caught in that window can often be dried in place. After that, mould and odour become more likely and the underlay usually needs replacing. Grey or black water changes things whatever the timing (see the water categories above).
